Cottonwood, Ariz.--Mayor Diane Joens announces the wrap-up of
a grant project funded by the Wayne Latham family-- Riverfront Realty
in Cottonwood. They provided an exciting grant research resource for all Verde
Valley non-profits. For the first time in the region, organizations were able
to search
locally for grants among the
80,000
grant sources in the Foundation
Center’s
Platinum database as well as the 1,800 grant makers with a history of giving
to Arizona’s non-profits. This resource was installed at the Cottonwood Public
Library and all Verde Valley community members were invited to use it.
Previously, the nearest locations for doing this extensive a grant search were
the Flagstaff and Phoenix public libraries. Grant-search databases that are a
fraction of this size are available at the Sedona Public Library and Yavapai
College’s Clarkdale campus library.

This
project was envisioned by Cocopai Resource Conservation and Development, Inc.
Cottonwood City Council Member and Cocopai RC&D vice president Diane Joens
commented, “Billions of grant dollars that Verde Valley organizations can
apply for are offered by United States foundations in these databases. Now
local non-profits; faith-based organizations; and city, town and county
governments can easily learn about those funding sources without having to
travel outside the Verde Valley.”

Cottonwood
Library director John O’Neill said, “The library provided space, a computer,
printing capability and support staff to assist anyone accessing these online
databases.” The library installed the Foundation Center’s and AZ Grants’
databases on a dedicated computer furnished by the library.

This local
community resource was established because of the
Wayne Latham family’s generosity. They funded it for two years. In
describing his family’s decision to provide the needed funds, Latham said, “We
wanted to contribute to the economic success of non-profits in Camp Verde,
Clarkdale, Cornville, Cottonwood, Jerome, Sedona, Verde Village and the other
local communities. After Cocopai RC&D initiated this project, they gave us the
opportunity to fund it, and we jumped at the chance.”

The Latham family were guests of honor at a
Cottonwood
Public Library reception on Thursday, March 9. The library is located at
100 S. 6th St.
in Cottonwood. O’Neill demonstrated the databases and Cocopai served refreshments.

size.
